We try to keep Bug on a pretty normal routine, but our day-to-day and week-to-week schedules are anything but normal. They are, in a word, wonky. You see, I manage a restaurant. This means that my schedule is different every week and my hours are different every day. My days off are different every week and I almost always work on the weekends. Sometimes I get lucky and two days off IN A ROW. Like a normal person. Hubby is a normal person… he is a civil engineer and works 8-5 Monday-Friday. A typical work week for me looks something like this:
- Sunday: 3pm-11pm
- Monday: 9am-7pm
- Tuesday: Off
- Wednesday: 4pm-12am
- Thursday: Off
- Friday: 9am-8pm
- Saturday: 4pm-12am
I absolutely love my work schedule. It allows me to work full time and have a career that I love, but it also allows for me to spend a lot of time with my Bug. As you can see above, I only work twice a week during the day. That means that I get to hang out with my little guy 5 days a week! When I work at night, I typically leave during his second nap and we get the opportunity to spend pretty much a full day together. We can go for a nice bike ride in the morning, go to the pool after lunch and then still be home in time for Mommy to go to work. I should also mention that I work for my parents… they own the restaurant… which makes things a lot easier if an emergency arises.
Hubby and I are very fortunate to live near our parents, and even more fortunate that our parents want to be very involved in Bug’s life. When I work during the day, I take Bug to my parent’s house and he gets to play with Grandma all day. When I work on a week night, my father-in-law takes off work early and comes over to watch Bug until Hubby gets home from work. (Have I ever mentioned that I have wonderful in-laws?) ‘Cause I do. On Saturdays, Hubby gets special time with his boy while I work. Hubby tends bar with me on Sunday nights and we take mister man over to my in-laws. They play and swim and then they usually bring him home to put him to bed so that we don’t have to pick him up so late at night.
We keep Bug’s routine the same regardless of where he is. He has cribs at both grandparent’s houses and a Bud (his lovey blanket) at both grandparent’s houses. I think our odd schedule has helped Bug be a pretty easy going guy. He is used to taking naps and going to bed in different places. He is used to one person putting him down for a nap and another waking him up. He is used to taking bottles from different people.
So, that’s it. How our life goes. Just how I like it.
